Texts vs Life
Group chat – 3:18 PM
Leo: random question
Maya: I don’t like where this is going
Josh: is it illegal
Me: why are you typing like that
Leo: what if
Maya: NO
Josh: I swear if this is about hanging out
Leo: what if we hung out
Josh: wow. brave. historic.
Maya: sir this is a weekday
Me: outside? like… outside outside?
Leo: don’t be dramatic
Josh: I don’t own “outside clothes”
Maya: last time we said this we never left our houses
Leo: I’m being serious
Josh: this is the most online sentence I’ve ever read
Me: okay but where
Maya: not the mall
Josh: not your house
Leo: why not my house
Maya: because your mom asks questions
Josh: food needs to be involved or I’m not risking social interaction
Me: café after school
Leo: acceptable
Maya: neutral territory
Josh: if it’s awkward I’m faking a phone call
Leo: it won’t be awkward
Maya: famous last words
Josh: screenshotting this
Me: 4 PM
Leo: bet
Maya: ugh fine
Josh: see you nerds
In the chat, we’re hilarious. Confident. Fully formed people with timing, personalities,
and opinions.
At 4:07, we meet outside the café.
Leo is already there, standing too straight. Maya shows up and half-hugs me, then immediately checks her phone. Josh jogs up late, out of breath, and says, “I was almost hit by a bike,” like it’s an introduction.
“Hey,” Leo says.
“Hey,” Maya says.
“Hey,” Josh says.
That’s it. That’s the energy.
We go inside and stare at the menu. Leo panics and orders something with four words he can’t pronounce. Maya says “surprise me” to the barista and then looks terrified. Josh forgets what he wants and asks if water costs money.
We sit.
In texts, Leo sends paragraphs. In real life, he says, “So… school...”
Josh, who types nonstop at night, is suddenly mute. Maya laughs too loudly at nothing. I start explaining my day in detail just to fill space, then immediately regret every sentence.
My phone buzzes under the table.
Leo: why can’t I speak
Maya: this is worse than I imagined
Josh: I’m sweating
I look up. Leo is staring into his drink. Maya is fixing her hair for the third time. Josh is aggressively scrolling.
“Okay,” I say. “This is awful.”
They all look at me.
“Thank you,” Josh says. “I thought it was just me.”
“I’m literally cooler on my phone,” Maya says.
Leo nods. “Online me would be disappointed.”
We laugh. Real laughter. Surprising one.
It’s still awkward after that. Just… manageable. We talk in pieces... We interrupt. We reach for our phones and stop ourselves halfway.
When we leave, it’s dark.
Later, the group chat explodes.
Josh: okay but that wasn’t horrible
Maya: IRL update: still awkward but improved
Leo: next time I’ll talk with my mouth
I type back.
Me: Texts are easy. Life is glitchy.
They all react with a laughing emoji. And somehow, that feels right.
And honestly?
I think we’ll try again.
